  3. It is convenient to measure distances in terms of solar radii. One solar radius is about 700,000 km, or 420,000 miles, or 
  4. 16 arc minutes.
  5. A coronagraph is a telescope that is designed to block light coming directly from the solar disk, in order to see the 
  6. extremely faint emission from the region around the sun, called the corona.

  8. CONNECTION WITH OTHER INSTRUMENTS

  10. The LASCO electronics box also provides services for EIT, since the two experiments are closely coupled.

  12. There is an important consequence from this: LASCO and EIT are supported by the same electronics command and 
  13. data-handling package. From the operational point of view, this one electronics package, the LASCO Electronics Box 
  14. (LEB), supports four coronal telescopes having similar technical characteristics, C1, C2, C3, and EIT. At the command 
  15. and data level, these four instruments are synchronized in highly coordinated operations, with their uplinked commands 
  16. and downlinked data interleaved into a single, common signal stream.
